Sadako, in her kimono
That bittersweet day of the graduation party was the last time Sadako would see her beloved school. Her condition was so unstable that Dr. Numata could not permit her to attend the graduation ceremony. As a graduation gift, Sadako’s classmates gave her a pretty red notebook signed by all of them and a kokeshi (wooden doll), which Sadako kept at her bedside until her death.
In April 1955, Sadako was promoted to the junior high school level. Although she was not permitted to attend the special ceremony for entering junior high school, this did not prevent her from becoming an official seventh-grader at Nobori-cho Junior High School.
As time passed, Sadako began to show signs of slight improvement. It seemed that the concentrated treatment of transfusions combined with the cortisone injections were effective in decreasing her white blood cell count. The news of her slight improvement was just enough to lift the spirits of the Sasakis and give them a sense of hope.
In May, Sadako was moved to a semi-private room which she shared with Kiyo Ohkura, a recovering tuberculosis patient who was two years older than Sadako. Kiyo was not thrilled at first about having a younger roommate, but soon Kiyo and Sadako became close friends. The many happy moments the two girls shared helped Sadako to tolerate her unpleasant daily routine. Sadako followed Kiyo, calling her O-ne-e-chan, which is an affectionate and respectful term for older sister.
